Greg Dawson Allen has a substantial repertoire of Highland and North East stories and is interested in the folklore and rituals of past generations. He has a deep respect for the landscape which has shaped the heritage and culture of the people. As a tradition bearer and a revivalist, Greg has an excellent knowledge of Scottish history, particularly of the Jacobite period. Much of his material is researched from obscure, lesser known or ephemeral sources which he makes accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
Based in the Highlands, Greg enjoys making use of natural found materials - wood, bone, stone – to inspire and foster the creation of new stories by the participants. He leads story tours of Inverness, bringing to life its most colourful characters and events and is very willing to adapt his stories to suit a client’s needs, tailoring workshops and sessions for individual projects. He is also a writer and theatre workshop practitioner, trading as Tellie Sperie (an old Scots word for a teller of tales or informant).
His extensive and varied creative experience includes writer in residence at Peterhead and Craiginches Prisons, contributor to the North East Folklore Archive and SCRAN, facilitator for Young Playwrights’ Workshop, Royal Court Theatre, London, writer of three premiered plays, The Poet Pen and the Preacher and Lorna, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Icebound at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.
Storytelling credits include Belladrum Tartan Hearts Festival, Society of Storytelling (England) Annual Gathering in York, Farr Woodlands Trust, Highland Countryside Rangers, Grampian Countryside Rangers, various Scout, Guide, Brownie, Beaver groups including a cross-cultural exchange camp for Inverness and Danish scouts, various schools (primary and secondary) and the University of Stirling (Highland Campus), Culloden Visitor Centre, Portsoy Small Boats Festival and Aberdeen Maritime Museum. He is also an award winner: achieving the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland Stewarts of Blairgowrie Trophy for Storytelling in1992, 1993, 2006), and a Gordon Forum for the Arts Commission Award.
