Donald Smith tells mainly Scots and Irish folk tales but is also interested in recovering oral stories from the literary manuscripts of a variety of cultures. He has made a special study of the tales and legends of the Celtic Saints.
Donald heard his first traditional tales as a child, but has been an active student of Scots and Irish storytelling for over twenty years. He started telling stories himself in the last three after a lot of listening. Donald is interested in the recovery of local storytelling traditions, in site specific events and story walks, and in working with community and church groups.
Donald is used to working with adults and children but is not sufficiently advanced to work with the under eights. He is a regular workshop leader, lecturer, and mentor to developing storytellers.
Donald travels widely in Scotland and is occasionally, but reluctantly, tempted elsewhere. He is a founding member of the Scottish Storytelling Forum and of Edinburgh's Guid Crack Club, and is currently Director of the Scottish Storytelling Centre at The Netherbow.
