John Wheeler tells trickster tales, creation myths, stories of cunning, compassion and of demons outwitted, of transformation, discovery and eccentric exploits, of imaginative and unlikely heroes. This is multicultural storytelling spiced with characterisation from his street theatre work and strongly influenced by his background in music. He has a particular interest in environmental themes, Welsh legends and rites of passage.
John's stories are suitable for all ages except the very young. His ability to become the characters is particularly appreciated by people with hearing difficulties and special needs. Music form the penny whistle and the occasional song also play their part.
John started life in Savernake Forest, Wiltshire in 1946. Later raised in the city he returned to the country as soon as his adulthood allowed, discovering a passion for woodwork while living in Wales. In 1980 he and his young family arrived in Dumfriesshire. On his 40th birthday he did his first clown show and discovered the joys of street theatre. He has been telling stories professionally since 1991, the year in which he first appeared in the Scottish International Storytelling Festival.
John Wheeler tells stories at festivals and ceilidhs, in schools, libraries and care homes, community centres and castles, around fires indoors and out in Scotland and abroad.
