Organising your Tell-a-Story Day event is fun and easy! Just read through this step-by-step guide – it will help you to think about what shape your event will take and what you need to make sure it runs smoothly:

Step 1. Plan your Tell-a-Story Day event

  • Where will the event be? In your living room? In a local church hall? At a school, a hospital, in a park? When choosing the space bear in mind what kind of audience you want to appeal to (and how large it will be!)
  • Who is coming? Some friends? Your neighbours? Children? Older people? Is it a public event, or for a specific private group?
  • What will it be like? An informal gathering of friends with a story to tell? A story-making and story-sharing project for a local community group? Consider arranging a visit from a local storyteller to get the stories going. Or if you are planning on running the event yourself, have a look at our resources and be inspired!
  • Is there going to be a theme? Organising a themed event can help you create the right atmosphere. Are your guests, especially children, going to come in fancy dress? Are you planning on decorating the venue according to the theme? We will soon publish some special thematic resources that can help you set the right tone.
  • What stories? If you are preparing to run the event yourself you may want to have a story or two ready to get the event going. Tales on the Tongue is a great source of tales, and if you register your event you can have it with a 30% discount! You can download for free three tales from the collection here.
  • Tell everyone about it! When you register your event, we will send you a support pack of posters, stickers and a flyer template which you can print and distribute. Ask a local shop, church, café if they are happy to display your poster and distribute your flyers. More than anything else tell your friends about your event and ask them to spread the word. Also if you told us that your event is open to the public, we will post all details on our website so that people can find you.

Step 2. Register your event and you will receive a support pack of Tell-a-Story Day posters and stickers for your event.

We recommend you register your event by Monday 26th September 2011 in order to receive your publicity materials in good time for your event.

Step 3. We want to hear from you! Send us your event feedback, along with any photos by Monday 14th November and we will send you a Tell-a-Story Day certificate of participation! Download the feedback form.
