StoryLab began with a three week showcase of young storytelling talent in October 2007, culminating with a series of events on Tell a Story Day on Friday 26th October celebrating traditional and contemporay means of storytelling and storymaking.

StoryLab is all about experimenting with storytelling, concocting your own stories and playing with different ways of making stories - trying out live storytelling skills, exploring high tech and low tech stories through film making, animation, art, drama, dance, music, creative writing or puppet theatre.

Fun and interactive StoryLab workshops are held reguarly at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, with creative media ranging from computer gaming, film and dance to art and craft, music, song and, of course, pure oral storytelling!

The story so far

Here's a selection of StoryLab events that have taken place at the Scottish Storytelling Centre and partner arts venues around Edinburgh and the Lothians:

  • The Great Bird Exchange – craft activities, storytelling and exhibitions of beautifully made and decorated birds. Bird Exchange has helped hundreds of Scottish and Ugandan children exchange bird images, raising funds for Ugandan projects and creating links between Scotland and Africa;

  • a StoryLab filmmaking workshop at Filmhouse, inspired by Tales of Earthsea, saw young people taking inspiration from the film to create and film their own story;

  • Giant's Chaos with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, where children worked with musicians from the SCO to create their own music, and perform it live to an invited audience;

  • a Gamemaker workshop at the Storytelling Centre gave young people the chance to use the latest software to explore storytelling through computer gaming

  • Captured! at the Museum of Edinburgh – a mask-making and storytelling workshop drawing on the city’s connection with the transatlantic slave trade;

  • Moving Stories for wee ones brought a fun, lively and interactive morning of stories and creative movement for pre-schoolers to the Scottish Storytelling Centre.
